Mein "Host Family Letter" (Bewerbungsbrief an die Gastfamilien)

Dear Host Family,
my name is Eileen Schult and I can’t tell you how joyful I am looking forward to spending a year in America and being a part of your family!

I live in Germany and I was born on 25th of July 1993. My parents got divorced when I was eight years old. Since then I have lived with my older sister Janine (she is 24 years old now) and my father in a little village called “Dassendorf” near Hamburg. In the last two years I have lived alone with my dad in our house, because my sister moved to the city. At the moment I am completing my final year of High School. Finishing school, I could have started to study at university this fall but I always wanted to take a break for some time before doing so. In my free time I play field hockey and I have done ballroom dancing for many years. I like to go to the lake near our hockey club with my friends to go swimming in summer and to go ice-skating in winter. We have had a dog for many years and I loved to take him for a walk, enjoying the nature and the silence. Moreover, I really like to go to the city, to go shopping and meeting friends. I enjoy spending my leisure time with friends or family, having some tea and a nice chat but I also like being by myself and just read books or listen to music. In general I would describe myself as an open-minded person.

My family is really important to me. They support me at all times and give me the feeling that they are proud of me. I live with my dad, but I also have a good relationship to my mom. Furthermore my two little cousins are really important to me. They make me happy when I feel sad and I love to play with them. The connection to my sister is really special. After my mom left us she was my female contact person and I trust her at every time.

I have a boyfriend since last year, his name is Eric. He is one of the most significant persons in my life. At our first date I told him about my plans to go to the US as an au pair and he respected my wish and supported me and my plans. He is excited about my experience in your family and he would like to visit me in America during my holidays.

The idea of going to America after finishing school got stuck in my head already in 2004, when my dad, my older sister Janine and I spent two weeks in Florida for vacation. We visited the Everglades, Disney World, Cape Canaveral and the Gulf of Mexico. I fell in love with this amazing country, but I just got the chance to visit Florida, mostly Miami and Orlando, and I am really interested in seeing a lot more of the US. At that time I decided to try to come back to America and learn more about this interesting country. Of course, becoming an au pair is also a big chance to improve my English. My English is alright, but today English is really important all over the world and I would like to be able to articulate myself in a better way. I would also like to learn more about the American culture and the people. I am self-confident, self-contained and I am able to take on responsibility. I hope the year in your family will make me more independent and I hope I will find a second family. For me the USA got that little special magic, like the stories about living the “American dream” or “the American way of life” and I would like to assure myself of this magic. Additionally becoming an au pair offers me the chance to connect a lot of my interests.

I have a full valid driver's license. I did pass this test on 21st October 2010 and I did take lessons with a qualified instructor. In order to being able to take the test I also attended a first aid lesson on 23rd June 2010. I drive five or more times per week, mostly in the rural areas and in the cities around our village, but sometimes on highways, too. I have never had a driving accident and I have never been charged for any driving offenses.

Besides I received a certificate in mediation at school. I work with younger children in my school to teach them how to argue and how to discuss without being violent. It makes me happy when I am able to help them finding a solution for their problems and teach them how they should treat their problems the next time.

Becoming an au pair in the US is very reasonable for me, because I have been working as a babysitter for my two little cousins (they are six and eight years old now) for four years now and I really like to spend my time with children. I play with them most of the time. I also help them with their homework, eat with them and take them to bed. They love it when I am drawing with them, even though I have to admit that I’m not really good at drawing. Outside we often play soccer or ‘horse’ (mostly I am the horse ;)) and inside the house they like to do jigsaws or play Wii. With my three other babysitter children it’s mostly the same, but they are a little bit more independent than my two cousins. I am their contact person, do homework and eat with them, but mostly they play on their own. Since I have been a babysitter I am able to take more responsibility for children and I have learned much about their needs.
I’ve also spent a lot of time with young people, in the age of twelve to fifteen, working voluntarily as an adviser for the church in my town. I worked there as a contact person, provided help when they had problems or questions.
As well I enjoyed the time I worked in the kindergarten in my town. I’ve spent ten days of my holidays there and I love to work with children! The time there was amazing and I’ve learned a lot. Basically I have learned much about working with groups of children while you have to focus on everybody. Mostly we were outside in the woods or at the playground. Inside we played many different games, did sports or creative things. I helped while the children were eating and put some of them to bed. Also the time as a helper to day-care at a day nanny's house (ten children in the age of 0-3 years) was interesting, I've cared for ten children, feeded them, changed nappies, play and sing with them. I think the experience in the kindergarten with young children in the age of three to six, my time as a helper at the day nanny's house, the time with my babysitter-kids and the experience as an adviser for young people taught me a lot for my time as an au pair in the USA.

I would really love to live in America for some time and I also like being with kids and have a turbulent everyday life.

I am keen to become a part of your family and I am sure we will have a great time together.

Kind regards, Eileen
